It’s an opportunity to increase people’s awareness and understanding of a difficult and misunderstood disability, and to increase their appreciation of the limits of that disability because so many people assume either that this means someone with brilliant and uncanny skills, or that the person with autism is completely unable to do anything independently, whereas most people on the spectrum are totally unlike both of these. But that is all. I love my wonderful, unusual and original daughter, and appreciate many of the autistic characteristics that make her so uniquely herself, but am I glad she has autism? Do I hope any children she may have will be on the spectrum?
